Don’t take them to school, give them to us!

sainsburys-ak-2014

This year’s ā€œActive Kidsā€ scheme starts on 29th January 14 and runs until 20th May 2014.

Please collect the vouchers and post them in the collecting box at the Scout Hut. The leaders are currently browsing the catalogue and compiling their ā€œwish listā€.

Thanks to your generosity, we received two big bags of sports equipment, which everyone in the group uses.

Spring Quiz Night

Spring Quiz Night

Following on from last year’s quiz night, we have a new and improved one for 2014Ā – this time with MORE activities for children – MORE questions for teens – MORE food options.

Food-wise, we will be serving chili con carne with rice or a tomato pasta.

Tickets are Ā£4 (children’s portion) / Ā£6 (adult / teenager sized portion) for food and the quiz
or £2 for just the quiz.

Speak to your Section Leader for tickets.

Cubs in a tangle

The cubs were given a challenge this week, to build a free-standing structure which could carry the weight of a brick.

The three sixes each had a good attempt – some more successfully than others.

The evening finished up with a game called ‘Tidy Up’ where junior members of each six had to adorn their sixers with as much equipment as possible (without dropping any).Ā  This wasn’t just a test of strength for the sixers, but tested their creativity in finding new ways to hold everything!

Mouse Powered Machines!

Despite the headline, the scouts did not train any mice to power their constructions during Friday’s meeting.Ā  Instead, the scouts built and raced mini cars powered by a wooden mousetrap.

We Need You!

We Need You (Wide 2)

The group needs your help to keep it running.

In particular we are looking for

  • adult help with Beavers and Cubs – every now and again or regularly
  • someone to look after hall bookings
  • someone to organise some fund raising for a big project.
  • a handyman (or handywoman) to take care of some minor repairs
  • someone to run a second hand uniform shop

If you think you could help please talk to any of the unit leaders or use theĀ Volunteer link on the front page of the website.

Before and After – the floor renovation project

Floor_before_and_after

Over the Christmas break, we have renovated the parquet floor of the scout hut.

We have spent a lot of time and money on the floor, so let’s hope that it is now in a state to stand up to another 10 years of wear and tear!

Thank you to Brewers Decorators Merchants on the High Street in Sevenoaks for discounting some of the tools we used.

See what we did at Bears Wood

After a surprisingly short journey squashed into the minibus, we arrived at Bears Wood campsite on the outskirts of Croydon on a chilly Friday evening.

There was some initial shock at just how cold it was inside the hut during flag-break and investitures, but the scouts warmed up after they explored the whole site with a game of capture the flag. They were welcomed back to much warmer hall by a roaring fire and mugs of hot chocolate.

One good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast later, we faced the outside. I think they describe the weather on Saturday as ‘wintery’ – waterproofs were going to be required!

First two activities were mini quads and bungee-run.

After lunch, the scouts tried the trust wall – where one scout traversed each side of a climbing wall, where each ‘hold’ could only be used on one side of the wall at a time; the assault course and the blind trail (one scout attached to a guide rope, the others blindfolded carrying cups of water).

The whole group played laser-tag until it got dark, before retreating to the hut for some impromptu fort-building in the hall and sock-drying in front of the fire.

Christmas dinner for 23

We held a Camp Carol-fire round their splendid terraced camp fire circle before topping-up with mince pies and hot chocolate.

Sunday arrived with brilliant blue skies, so after breakfast we went out for a mini orienteering course before even more mince pies, silly games, secret santa and striking camp.
